                Belly Dance Class FAQs

                Where are you located?
Symmetry Dance is located in Haymarket, VA.  Because the studio is located in my home, I prefer not to list the address online.  Students who register will receive a confirmation email with the address and other information.  If you need the street address of this studio, please email me at ayperi.dances@yahoo.com.

Can I watch a class before I sign up?
No, I do not allow observers in class.  However, you can always try a class out by dropping in for a rate of $15.00 per class.

Can I join if the 8-week session has already begun?
Yes.  Please email me if you are interested in starting a class before the end of the registered session.  We can either do a pro-rated price for the remainder of the session, or you can do a drop-in fee per class until a new session starts.

Can I make up classes if  miss one?
Yes.  Students are welcome to make up any missed classes by attending another weekly class of the same level.  This must be done within the 8-week registered period and cannot be carried into the next session.

What is your Class Cancellation policy?
If class needs to be cancelled for any reason such as inclement weather, I will post a notice on the Symmetry Dance facebook page and also send an email to all the students.  If you are unsure, please do not hesitate to call me.  Make-up classes will be scheduled if possible.

If I can't make a class one night, what should I do?
Please try to contact me, I don't want to worry!  Please text, call, or e-mail me if you know you will not be able to attend class.

I don't have a dance background, can I still take these classes?

Yes!  Sign up to my beginner I class and experience the joy of this dance for the first time.  You do not need to have any prior dance training.

I've taken belly dance before, do I have to start with your beginner I class?

Yes.  My dance and teaching style will differ from that of your former instructor.  I would like you to start in the beginner I class as my new student.  If you are ready to move up to a higher level class soon after starting a beginner class, then we can certainly discuss the options.

How long do I have to stay in beginner I belly dance before I can move up to beginner II?
I require dancers to have at least 6 months (3 8-week sessions) of belly dance basic training before moving to Beginner II.

How long does it take to learn belly dance?
Normally, it takes a minimum of 3-5 years of dedicated Middle Eastern dance study and practice before one is ready to begin transitioning into a professional dancer.  Even then, professional dancers usually continue to study this great art form as part of their professional dance development.  There is so much to learn about this dance that it could take a life time to cover it all.

What should I wear to class?
Please wear comfortable workout/yoga pants and a form-fitting or crop top shirt.  You do not have to show your belly.  Please wear a hip scarf around the hips so that I can see you hip movements.  This does not have to be a belly dance hip scarf, any scarf that can tie around the waist will be fine.  Dancers usually dance in their bare feet or wear ballet shoes.

Does the studio have a private area where I can change into work out clothes?
Yes. There is a private bathroom located right off the studio.

Am I too old/heavy/skinny to belly dance?
No way.  There is no specific type of body best suited for belly dance.  It is a great dance for all women of different shapes, sizes, and ages.  Belly dance is great exercise and can be incredibly uplifting.  You will learn to love your body.  If you have any concerns, it is always a good idea to check with your doctor before attending any physical dance class.

I have back/knee problems, can I still take belly dance?
Yes.  However, you should always talk to your doctor before doing any kind of dance.  Please let me know of any concerns or injuries you might have before class.  If you need to sit out, please feel free to do so and perhaps take notes.  Be sure to listen to what your body is telling you.

                Are there student performance opportunities?

Yes!  I would love to eventually have student recitals and haflas.  Please let me now if you are interested in performing.

I want to learn a style that you do not offer, what should I do?

You have lucked out!  The D.C. metropolitan area is full of wonderful and incredibly knowledgeable instructors.  Visit my resources page for a good list or ask me for a recommendation.
