                _What is Belly Dance?

                Picture
_This dance is an ancient art form and its exact origin is unknown.  There are several theories on where it began and why it was practiced. Over the years it has grown in popularity and morphed into many different styles, classical to modern.  "Belly dance," a term used mainly in America, has many different names, such as "Middle Eastern Dance," "Raqs Sharki," "Dance Oriental," etc.  The most common and distinguishable features present in all forms of Middle Eastern dance are the core movements of the abdomen and isolations that give belly dance that mysterious illusion, grace, and fluidity.

There are many benefits of Middle Eastern dance, including exercise, stress relief, fun, relaxation and, in many cases, the chance to develop lasting friendships.  Middle Eastern dance has often been a tool for self-expression and transformation.  It is an art that is natural to a woman's physical nature, body shape, and muscle structure.  I believe that it is a dance that portrays feminine beauty and excellence, especially when performed with skill and grace.  I feel that anyone could benefit from this art form no matter the body form, age, or background.  It is about being a woman and, for some, it brings a great sense of confidence and fulfillment.
